FSX Mesh
« on: September 08, 2007, 07:04:40 PM »
I have installed the US West terrain mesh plus landclass.
Last night I took a flight out of KSEA and headed East to see how the desert environment looks because in default, it was not so good.
In eastern Washington there was some benefit to the mesh but not as much as I thought there would be. I went to KLAS to take a look there for two reasons. One I have flown into KLAS and noticed the reddish rock looking layers etc., and the mesh files in FS9 render that look pretty good. So I am comparing the two sims. Is their something about FSX that will not allow  mesh to look as good as in FS9.
The desert type regions just look so, missing something.
PS. I am guessing that mesh gives the reddish color. Maybe it's the default textures that do this, I don't know.
The mouintains around KSEA look good as well as the sloping to the water, Puget Sound.
Thankyou for your excellent work, good mesh really does make a good sim environment.

Hi Larry,

Thank you, too.  :-)

The mesh gives the shape to the ground.  The textures give the colors.

Have you moved your Terrain Resolution slider to 10m from the default 38m?

I had it set to something else and I changed it. Still about the same.
I will post a photo of the area around Las vegas, and a screenshot from about the same area in FS9 and FSX. Just a little something to look at.
I have to go to the other pc to do this.

This is FSX. About the same area as above in the real photo.

Larry, you might want to check out these files:

usa_ground_textures_part_1.zip (8 seperate zips necessary) by Alan Mills

Alan has also made sets for Europe as well.

Not dramatic, but I do feel Alan's work are preferable to the defaults.

And you might also find these a nice alternative to both desert and mountain area's for certain areas of the U.S. :

fsxdesertmod_1a.zip and fsxtexturemod_1b.zip by Garett Schmidt

Back-up your directories. Before installing any of these, I 'zipped' my world/texture directory complete.

What you are seeing are landclass and texture issues, not necessarily mesh issues. Until someone like Ground Environment (or similar) comes out with something better, the above might be you best bet right now. There is little doubt that eventually someone will address this as was done in FS9.

Thankyou. I have downloaded all the files you mentioned, actually someone else mentioned the same ones, and I am backing up files now.
I read that the fsx textures, for some reason, were, or are a problem. I don't quite remember the exact writing, and, your right, down the line, someone will develop good textures for fsx.
Thanks again, and have a good week.

I'm new to FSX and am wondering If I get the FSGenesis mesh will FSX use it automatically? Or do I have to tell FSX to use it somehow? Thanks for any help.

If you accept the default path of the auto-installer it will be used automatically.

Thanks
