Now I feel stupid
« on: September 04, 2010, 10:56:24 AM »
Hi,

I asked about the old mesh and was told that I should be using new FSX mesh.  OK, so I purchase the US 10 mesh and run the install programs.  I wasn't sure how this all works so I looked at my scenery active libraries in FSX and saw no entries regarding the FSG mesh.  I see some folders under "Microsoft Games" and one is called "Microsoft Flight Simulator Xscenery" and I see a bunch of folders in that folder labeled with numbers.  In there I see tha scenery folders with the bgl files.  I did not see these added to my scenery library so I added them in manually.  Now I am wondering if I have them in my FSX twice.  I looked in the "scenery" folders to see if the bgl files are also in there but got lost as I am not that accustomed to the FSX protocols yet.  I searched for a FSG manual but all I see in the folder called "Microsoft Flight Simulator XFSGDocs" is a bunch of un-install files and no actual documentation.  Can someone teach this old guy to "fish" so I don't need to keep bugging you fine folks as I have no idea if I have this installed correctly.  There were some instructions as the auto installers were running and maybe I should have payed better attention then but I thought I would be able to revert back to some documentation if I needed to.

Sorry to be a pain and thanks in advance.

Hi Lou,

If any Scenery Library entries were required the instructions would have told you to make them. :-)

No Scenery Library entires are required if you accept the default install path since those folders are already listed in the Scenery Library.  Just install and fly.

If you want to confirm installation, look in the \scenery\XXXX\scenery folders for "fsgdem*" files.  If they are there they are installed and the sim is using them.

thanks

Hi Justin,

Well that's part of the problem as I see no manuals anywhere.  Also, I can't find the fsg bagels anywhere except out side of the FSX folder.  My fsx is installed ioutside of the x86 folder and on a drive seperate from the c drive so I am not sure if that is what the problem is or not.  I did have the installer pointed to where fsx is installed.

I deleted my manual entries from within FSX and copied the bgl files from the "Microsoft Flight Simulator Xscenery" into the corresponding scenery sub folders in the FSX main folder under "Scenery".  Hopefully everything will be OK.

Hi Justin,

First, this is not a complaint, this has to do with whether I have an install problem or not.  I was landing on runway 27 in Beverly last night (in the sim) and I think I saw an issue that may be indicating that the mesh is not working in my sim.  I learned to fly here and it is where I attained my private and commercial pilots license along with my instument rating so I am very familiar with this airport.(KBVY).  In the real world there is a pretty good size hill that runs along the left side of the runway but as I was landing on runway 27 but in my sim it was flat as a pancake.  Again, it's not a complaint or a request to fix anything, I am just trying to determine if my mesh has an install problem as I manually moved the files into the scenery folders.  I don't know why they did not install correctly as the only odd thing in my set-up is that I do not have FSX installed on my C drive.  Would it be possible for someone to check to see if they have a hill along the left side of runway 27 in beverly so I can determine if its an install issue or not.

Oh I am using the US 10M mesh from here.

Thanks,
LouP

Me again,

I've been scouring the internet but this is the only pitcure that I can find,  You can see the hill in the background with the buildings on it behind the crowd.  Runway 27 is just in from of this hill.  I know that it's not much of a hill but one that I think would show on 10M mesh.  I do have my FS settings to 10M.

Hi Lou,

Do search for "fsgdem*.bgl" and let me know the locations it returns

Hi Justin,

I am not at home but I remember that I moved them manually into several folders under the scenery folder withinFSX.  The folders I moved them to under scenery were new to me and I do not recall ever seeing them in FS9.  They were labled with a series of four numbers.  I will do the search when I get home tonight.
