Better-than-9m-mesh?
« on: July 22, 2007, 01:10:44 PM »
haha ... first post in the FSX section ...  :P

Uhm yes --- as the FSX engine can handle even better mesh and the radius it can display high-res mesh is considerably larger, are there plans for - say - 4m mesh for selected areas, like Yosemite, Grand Canyon, ... ?

Sort of "show-off" mesh ...  :D

That would depend on the availability of 3-meter source data.  There are a few small pockets of it available, but still not sure it would be practically useful considering file size vs visual impact.  Might have some use as a demonstration product, but the only thing it might demonstrate is the impracticality of it.   ;)

Yep, that's what I thought --- perhaps some mountain ... a cliff ... ?

As I said, like the 9m areas for FS2002 which were - well - not so useful then, because of the tiny area the mesh was displayed ...  ;)

It would be interesting to taxi over such an area ... lol!

Devil's Tower, Wyoming?
Monument Valley?
Grand Tetons?

Maybe nice with 3m or less mesh?

1)   What is the smallest area that 3m mesh could be installed? Is it like textures (1.2km- squared), or can you do smaller areas?

2)   Is it possible to get high resolution mesh to follow rivers, railroads, or other areas of interest?  This may come in handy for the new MSTS-X. It would also be nice when piloting a boat up the Snake, or Colorado rivers.

Cheers,
Jim

HI Jim,

1) Though the source data would be 3m, the output would be eith 4.3m (LOD13) or 2.1m (LOD14), and the smallest areas would be about 1 km and .5 km (approx), respectively.

2) Yes, depending on the resolution of that other source data.

Yep, it's possible, but as Justin says file sizes are an issue and the blurring introduced with SP1 is kind of a worry because of file size issues...

Here's a screenie of an early test of 2m DEM and 2ft Per Pixel imagery...  Huge project though, would take 30+ Dual Layer DVD's to distribute...

That's interesting, thanks! You got more info / screenies on this?

Yep, of course we are talking small areas only ... perhaps a National Park, like Yosemite?

right now this project covers an entire state...  thing is it may take a year or so to get it completed due to the massive nature of the project, am actually considering going freeware with it as an ongoing project technology sample...  I don't have the distribution and manufacturing channels to be able to go for a mainstream commercial release, i'm thinking hobby release of a technology demo would be good...  might help secure some contracts with some of the GIS data providers...  That way I can also release things on a timescale that I choose rather than being pressured by deadlines etc...

i might try and release some stuff in coming weeks, still not sure though but i'll think about what i can do ;-)
