After more than three months of around-the-clock production, the US portion of North America Terrain Mesh for FSX is now complete. Manual and auto-installers are now available for immediate download and the 4-DVD US set has begun manufacturing and shipping. We xpect to take several days clearing the backlog of DVD orders, so watch your mailboxes over the next couple of weeks if you have ordered the media version. V2 is a significant enhancement to the previous verson, fixing the plateaus at thousands of public-use airports, as well as increasing the vertical resolution to .25 meters on the media version and .5 meters on the download verson. The download version comprises more than 4 Gb of a highly-accurate and refined 9.6m (LOD12) digital elevation model compiled specifically for FSX, or on 4-DVDs, shipped free anywhere in the world. Work will begin immediately on V2 Canada, Alaska, and Mexico, which we anticipate to be copmleted on or about May 10. This DVD will ship automatically to those ordering the media version North America. The rest of the V2 world will follow around the end of May. V2: Two versions; New Pricing Structure With the enormous size of the FSG FSX Terrain packages, bandwidth has become an acute and ever-more-serious concern, from both the consumer and the business end. As file sizes increase they become more difficult to reliably download, as well the cost of doing business increases when throughput and data transfer costs threaten to spiral out of control. To address these concerns, FSG has decided that it has become necessary to split our distribution options into download versions and media versions, both based on the same source data but compiled using different compression parameters. V2: Download version The download version will comprise the files available on the server for immediate download, obviously. All users will have immediate access to this version upon completion of their purchase. The download version will be compiled using a higher compression parameter, and will have a vertical resolution of .5 m, resulting in an approximately 70% decrease in file size but with a very slight decrease in visual fidelity. V2: Media Version The media version will be distributed via multiple DVDs and will be compiled using a much lower compression parameter, and will have a vertical resolution of .25 m, resulting in a much larger file size but with highly-refined visual fidelity. V2: New Pricing Structure The price of the basic download for North America Terrain Mesh for FSX will be reduced from the current $24.95 to $21.95. The price for the optional V2 5-DVD set will increase from the current $10.00 to $25.00, shipping included. The pricing structure for the World Terrain Mesh for FSX will remain the same at $19.95 for the download and $5.00 for the DVD option. The price of the FSX Bundle, which includes both the above products plus The US National Landclass Project for FSX, has increased to $44.95.This new pricing structure is effective immediately. Those who have already ordered, of course, have already been locked into their previous price. |

First files to being appearing on Monday . . . Concept and procedural testing has been completed, having yielded encouraging results. Update files will begin appearing in a couple of days, and will appear regularly over the next month or so if all goes as planned. When all update files have been posted for download, optional DVDs will ship. Downloadable update files will be free to all who have previously purchased version 1. Optional updated media will follow the current pricing structure of $10 for the 3-DVD North America set, and $5 for the World DVD with free shipping. Version 2 Features . . . The most prominent feature of version 2 is the addressing of the plateaus on which many airports are sitting in version 1. This plateau effect is not caused by the terrain mesh, per se, but by the flat-airport limitation of FSX. However, FSGenesis has developed a reasonably satisfactory proprietary method to deal with this issue globally without having to fix many thousands of individual airports manually.Additionally, vertical resolution has been increased from 1 meter in v. 1 to .25 meter in v. 2, which will create a more pleasing display of terrain elevations while eliminating any terracing effects seen in version 1. Price increase on Horizon . . . As the version 2 distribution process progresses, the price of all FSX terrain mesh products will increase, so it is to your advantage to lock in your price now at todays lower prices. Stay tuned for further details . . . |
